Kepa Arrizabalaga is now playing in Madrid, Geronimo Rulli will be out of Ajax at least until the turn of the year due to a shoulder injury and Stefan Ortega Moreno is not allowed to leave Manchester City: the list of possible new Bayern goalkeepers has gotten smaller and smaller in recent days.
But now there was also positive news to report from the German record champions. According to coach Thomas Tuchel, the operation, which Manuel Neuer recently underwent again, went very well. “The prognosis for returning to team training, which is never 100 percent certain, has shortened significantly, Manu’s development is extremely positive. I’ve also seen him train for the last two days. Of course I’m not a rehabilitation expert, but what I saw was very impressive, it looked very good.”
Bayern expect Neuer to return to team training in “the next few weeks”. Which could also have consequences for the goalkeeper search. Instead of signing a potential number one, who will keep goal at least until Neuer makes a comeback and then at least be considered a serious competitor for the 37-year-old, Sven Ulreich should continue to be trusted and stand between the posts.
Tuchel: “The requirements remain the same”
“The priority in all planning is basically to give Manu time and rest, to get healthy and get back in goal,” explained Tuchel. “And at the same time we want to be competitive at a very high level. And Ulle is doing very well at the moment, but we can’t guarantee that with just Ulle and the constellation as it is right now. That’s why it’s still our turn, trying to sign a goalkeeper. And the stipulations remain the same.”
Ulreich had already made a good impression in the preparation and was powerless in the 0:3 in the Supercup against Leipzig in all three goals conceded. Another goalkeeper should come because behind Ulreich only the inexperienced professional Tom Ritzy Hülsmann (19) would be ready.
