Kevin Behrens Shines with Hat-Trick and Sets New Record Against Mainz

Kevin Behrens took center stage with three goals on the first day of the game. The 32-year-old has long been an integral part of the starting XI.

Will confirm his good start to the season in the next few weeks: Union striker Kevin Behrens (M.). IMAGO/Contrast

Kevin Behrens bagged the ball after his hat-trick against Mainz 05 (4-1). Teammate Aissa Laidouni had presented him with the game device. “Hopefully my son still has it, he’s playing with it in the dressing room right now,” smiled the goalscorer immediately after the final whistle. Of course, he had reason to be happy about his performance. Immediately after his goals, the 32-year-old had a big grin on his face as he walked towards the main stand and waved to his family.

Behrens is currently on everyone’s lips. Already in the preparation he was one of the most conspicuous players on the pitch. Now the father of two simply took his magnificent form from the previous season into the new round. “It was a good start. You have to confirm that over the next few weeks. It’s also clear that you don’t always score three goals. But today it wasn’t so bad,” emphasized Behrens.

Behrens sets a new record against Mainz

Truly not. He could have scored a fourth goal on Sunday, but this header went just a few meters wide of the goal. When things got dangerous for Behrens, it was always in the aerial duels, where he was mostly able to assert himself against Mainz defenders Edimilson Fernandes, Stefan Bell and Dominik Kohr. “I was good at headers early on in my youth and was never afraid to go to the ball. That has developed over the years. The headers weren’t that bad today,” said Behrens.

Nice that I was able to register in the database.

He is allowed to praise himself because it is true. With his three goals, the native of Bremen set a new record. Because: Behrens is the first player since the start of detailed data collection in the 1998/99 season to manage a hat-trick in the Bundesliga. “It’s nice that I was able to enter myself in the database,” joked Behrens, who is bursting with self-confidence and seems much more athletic than when he started at Union.

That wasn’t always the case, he only held a wild card role at the beginning of the preseason. Only shortly before the start of the second half of the season did he replace Jordan as Sheraldo Becker’s storm partner. And from then on it was impossible to imagine the starting line-up without him. “I tried to give everything. Do what the coach asks you to do. Goals always help. But at Union you don’t just have to score goals, you also have to work a lot for the team, fix the balls and pass them on. There I have I’ve improved,” said Behrens, who will probably also win one or the other aerial duel in the away game in Darmstadt on Saturday (3.30 p.m., LIVE! at kicker).
