Masters 1000 in Rome: the day after his exploit, Alexandre Müller exited in the round of 16

A short-lived feat, literally. A brilliant winner over Andrey Rublev the day before, Alexandre Müller fell on Tuesday in the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Rome against Chilean Nicolas Jarry (7-5, 6-3). The last Frenchman in the running did not find the solution against the 24th in the world, a clay court specialist who dominated the exchanges with his serve and his long forehand.

Müller’s Roman fortnight still remains largely positive. The 27-year-old Frenchman had only won two Masters 1000 matches in his career so far, beating three of them to reach the round of 16. He thus offered himself the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (50th) in the first round (4-6, 7-6, 6-2), his compatriot Arthur Fils (34th) in the second round (7-5, 6-3) then the Russian Andrey Rublev (6th) Monday (3-6, 6-3, 6-2). This victory against the very recent winner of the Masters 1000 in Madrid constitutes the best performance of his career.

A few minutes before his elimination, Müller received an invitation to Roland-Garros (May 26-June 9) and will move, thanks to his good performance, from 109th to 89th place in the ATP rankings. The 27-year-old suffers from Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, a priori incompatible with the practice of high-level sport.
