Another goodbye. This Wednesday, John Isner announced his retirement from professional tennis. The historic American giant of 36 yearswho is currently ranked 106th in the world ranking will say goodbye.

“After more than 17 years on the ATP Tour, it is time to say goodbye to professional tennis. This transition will not be easy, but I look forward to every second with my amazing family. The US Open will be my final event. It is time to tie them up for the last time,” he confessed on social media.

The American, the tallest player on the ATP circuit with a height of 2.11 m, a record shared with Reilly Opelka, will leave professional tennis exactly at the US Open where he received one of the wild-cards.

In his career, he won 16 ATP titles (the 2018 Miami Masters 1000 was the most important) and played another 15 finals (including four Masters 1000).

But, without a doubt, he went down in history and his name traveled to the world, by winning the longest match in tennis history. Between June 22 and 24, 2010, in the first round of Wimbledon, he defeated the French Nicolas Mahutwith a time of 11 hours, 6 minutes and 23 seconds, and 183 games played, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 70-68.

This year, much closer in time, the American was on the verge of a record, since he was one ace away to reach the mark held by Ivo Karlovic with 45 service winners in the same three-set match (Halle 2015) in his loss in the ATP final in Dallas against Yibing Wu.

Anyway, Isner yes holds the record for aces in five-set matches. with 113 (in that interminable match against Nicolás Mahut at Wimbledon 2010) leads a list that has Mahut himself in second position (at Wimbledon in the aforementioned match against Isner).
