Gwénaël Le Bellec: From Archery Enthusiast to National Podium Winner in Course Archery

The Plouescatais Gwénaël Le Bellec, 48, has been an archer for 30 years, licensed since his debut in his heart club, in Quéven (56), near Lorient. His little-known discipline is course archery (or 3D shooting). “These are competitions where archery and hiking are mixed. On a course of 2 to 4 km, you have to discover targets, 3D representations of animals, and carry out timed shots in always different relief and obstacle configurations”, explains Gwénaël Le Bellec.

The archers are divided into categories of age, sex, and types of weapons, from the wooden bow to the compound bow and sight, known as a free bow. It is with this last type of arc that the Plouescatais competes. “You need hours of adjustment before the competitions. To make a simple comparison, my bow is a Formula 1,” smiles Gwénaël Le Bellec. At the end of his 2023 sports season, after having won the titles of champion of Morbihan and champion of Brittany, the archer from Plouescat has just achieved a feat.

Un podium national

Out of 400 French archers in his category, he was one of the 35 qualified for the French championship in Bourg St Maurice, on August 12 and 13, and won the bronze medal there. “The day of August 13 was a bit crazy. It was a heat wave, it was 37 degrees. I got off to a bad start, then I made a good comeback. I have always revolved around the national podiums. It’s my first. Winning is my pleasure,” rejoices Gwénaël Le Bellec.
