This Friday morning a new edition of the Basketball World Cup begins, with the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia as venues for the event. The contest that brings together the 32 best basket-maker teams in the world will look for a champion after Spain was crowned the monarch four years ago.

An edition that will have a great absence: Argentina. The runner-up in the world in the previous edition, was left out of the contest after failing to earn a place in the American qualifiers. The Dominican Republic got them out of the way in the last game, played on trans-Andean soil.

Today, the albiceleste already knows that they will not be selected in the Olympic Games either, after failing against Bahamas in the final of the Olympic Qualifier played in their country. Thus, trans-Andean basketball enters a serious crisis after years of reaping great success.

But those who are, and en masse, are the NBA players. Beyond the fact that the United States Team will not go with their class A cards to the contest, they will go with several superstars in training, who already lead their teams or are on their way to do so.

But without a doubt, the great attraction of this contest is that, like never before, the NBA is an international league, which is why most of the teams present in the contest have at least one player in the main basketball league of the world.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic are the two major international absentees in the tournament, but players like Luka Doncic (Slovenia) will be there, probably the great attraction of the tournament. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada), Lauri Markkanen (Finland) or Karl Anthony Towns (Dominican)

Josh Giddey (Australia), Bogdan Bogdanovic (Serbia), Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner (Germany), Jordan Clarkson (Philippines) or Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier (France) will also be there. All of them will give competitiveness to a tournament where the United States has the mission of recovering the crown.

For this they will have a big three thinking about the future. Jaren Jackson Jr, Jalen Brunson and Anthony Edwards are called to give competitiveness to a team that finished in seventh place last year, losing in the quarterfinals against France.

When is the Basketball World Cup played?

The Basketball World Cup will be played between August 25 and September 10 in Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan. The final will be played on September 10 at the Mall of Asia Arena, in Manila, Philippines.

When is the NBA back?

The NBA will return to the ring on October 24, in a regular season that will end on April 14.
