German Defender Sara Doorsoun Could Return for Knockout Stage of Women’s World Cup

Status: 01.08.2023 2:05 p.m

Positive news from the German World Cup base: According to the DFB, the injured defender Sara Doorsoun could possibly play for Germany again at the tournament Down Under if she reaches the knockout stage. Left-back Felicitas Rauch, who is also ailing, is already doing running training.

An MRI scan at Doorsoun revealed that the Eintracht Frankfurt defender suffered a muscular lesion in her left thigh in the World Cup match against Colombia (1-2) last Sunday (07/30/2023), the DFB announced on Tuesday (01.08.2023) at the team headquarters in Wyong. There is “cautious optimism that she can return to the tournament if the German team advances”. Doorsoun sustained the injury in the first half of the Colombia game and was substituted at half-time. She is currently unable to train with the team.

On Thursday (August 3rd, 2023, 12 noon CEST, in the live ticker on sportschau.de) Germany will play against South Korea in the last and decisive group game of the preliminary round to qualify for the round of 16.

Left-back Rauch “is on the right track”

The defense is currently the biggest construction site for national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. She should therefore have been particularly pleased with the positive news on Tuesday that the 27-year-old defensive player Felictas Rauch from VfL Wolfsburg has already been doing running training and sitting on the ergometer again. “She’s on the right track,” said a DFB spokeswoman.

Rauch, who is one of the regular formations of the DFB team, sprained his knee in training last Friday (07/28/2023) and missed the game against Colombia (1: 2) on Sunday.

Hegering an option for the South Korea game

Central defender Marina Hegering from VfL Wolfsburg, who was not used in the first two tournament games after her injury from preparation for the World Cup, reported that she was fit again on Monday (07/31/2023). She is therefore an option for the starting XI in the South Korea game in Brisbane. Midfielder Sydney Lohmann is also fully resilient again, as the DFB announced. Two defenders, Giulia Gwinn and Carolin Simon, missed out on World Cup participation due to knee injuries.
