Gianni Petrucci plays the first programmatic card. B teams also in basketball

The Federal Council of the FIP, chaired by Gianni Petrucci, has opened up to the hypothesis of B teams also in basketball.

The topic was recently back in the news following the words of Michele Catalani, a strong man in the youth sector of Olimpia Milano. «I see that all the Euroleague clubs have a second team. In Italy we have an obstacle, the impossibility for a club to have two teams in high-level leagues. If five or six Serie A clubs could have satellite clubs it would be easier.”

This is the FIP press release: «In light of the experiences gained in other disciplines, the Federal Council has discussed the hypothesis of second teams for the clubs of the Lega Basket Serie A. If the project comes to fruition, membership would not be mandatory».

“B teams” have long been a reality in Italian football, albeit with limited numbers. The first to create one was Juventus, followed by Atalanta. Next season it could be Milan’s turn.

They currently play in Serie C, and according to the FIGC regulations: «The second team will be able to be promoted to the Serie B championship at the end of the 2023/2024 Serie C championship, but will never be able to participate in the same championship as the first team, nor in a Superior championship.”

However, relegation to Serie D is prohibited, which for football is the first of the amateur championships: «in the event of relegation of the Second team to the National Serie D Championship, it will not be able to register for the Amateur Championship and will be able to ask to be admitted to the Championship of Serie C 2024/2025 only in the event of a staff vacancy in the same Championship, according to the procedures that will be established for this purpose”.

Let us remember that in basketball the only LBA is a professional league. Serie A2 is the highest amateur level.
