Dominican Republic Defeats Canada in Impressive World Cup Victory

Twenty-four hours after being Spain’s last rival on the way to the World Cup, the Dominican Republic has exhibited all its virtues, including the determination with which it has played the last quarter and which has served it to end up defeating Canada.

The first half has been eminently offensive. He has started dominating Canada, which has gone 6-12 (minute 4) and 17-24 (minute 9) with three pointers from Brooks. But the Dominican reaction has not been long in coming. Peña has chained actions of speed, Delgado has taken advantage of his well-known rebounding ability, and seconds before the honk, a triple by Peña has put the Dominican Republic ahead (27-26). In the second quarter, with moments for each team, there was a very distant three-pointer by Towns (36-33, minute 14) and a more effective collective game by the Caribbeans, who have reached a maximum advantage of +6 (44-38 , minute 18). Barrett’s response and two almost consecutive attacking fouls have cut off the Dominican fluidity, which in any case has maintained its advantage on the scoreboard at halftime (48-47).

The second half has been equally balanced. As the minutes passed, the Dominicans have evened the fight for the rebound. Jordi Fernández has ended up giving rest to several of his reference players, and instead Néstor García, although he has dosed Towns a lot, has not made concessions. The maximum equality has been reflected at the end of the third quarter (66-66).

In the last one, the Dominicans have given a first stretch (80-68, minute 35) in a few minutes of especially inspiring scoring by Figueroa. Shortly after, Towns returned to the pitch, and the score was adjusted again (86-83, minute 39) after a three-pointer by Thomas Scrubb. But a spectacular three-pointer by Montero (89-83), two free throws by Towns (91-86) and a final 2+1 by Montero himself (94-88) sealed the victory for the Dominicans.
