Chairman and Youth Trainer at BC Hoogkerk: Promoting Social Sports and Community Engagement

Chairman and youth trainer at BC Hoogkerk

HOOGKERK – ‘I have been playing at Badmintonclub Hoogkerk since I was ten years old. I wanted to give something back to my club and therefore became a youth coach in 2016. I still do that with great pleasure. I like to be involved and I also know everyone well. As an association you depend on volunteers. I am now also the president of the club. It has been tense at times with board members. You need at least three. Fortunately, we currently have five. That is really fantastic, all volunteers are very much appreciated. I also train new trainers. Some youth players like to flow through and therefore want to give training. We are a small club, with about forty members. Half of them are youth players and the other half are adults. We play at a recreational level and meet on Thursday evenings. Youth play from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm and adults from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. We do not compete with other clubs. If there is a question about this, we will of course look at the possibilities. The members mainly come to us for social sports. Even between the parties it’s a lot of fun. Badminton resembles other racket sports in terms of hand-eye coordination, but is different in terms of technique and tactics. A good badminton player is good on his or her feet, agile, fast, tactical and knows how to find space. So we try to train for that. You actually want to let your opponent run as much as possible. There are different levels at our club, which makes it a lot of fun. Although we are a small club, you do not have permanent partners. Everyone is involved and especially beginners are well taken along by the members. They really won’t just smash the shuttlecock at your toes. The new badminton season starts on Thursday 7 September. It is suitable for all ages. Our oldest player is now over 70, but still runs at least as fast as people in their 50s or 60s. Everyone is welcome to come by. Even if you’re alone, I’d say take that step. You will receive a very warm welcome, you will receive an exclusive introduction and you can play with the big boys right away. Dare to come by.
