Basketball Löwen Braunschweig Signs Talented Guard Barra Njie to Three-Year Contract

With the 22-year-old Barra Njie, the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig have managed to retain a very talented guard for the long term. The 1.91 meter tall and athletic Swedish national player has signed a three-year contract with the lions and is moving from the second Spanish league to the easyCredit BBL.

“Barra is also a young, hungry player who fits in very well with us and our concept and has a special dynamism and athleticism. We were able to convince ourselves of that two years ago here in the Tunica sports hall when he completed a few individual training sessions. So we’ve been following Barra for a long time and we know what potential he has. He has shown that in recent years and is currently doing so with the Swedish national team, where he impresses with his versatility in scoring, passing, defending and rebounding. But Barra is far from finished with his development. That’s why we’re really looking forward to working together and to special and spectacular moments with him in our team,” says Löwen managing director and sports director Nils Mittmann about the penultimate signing.

Barra Njie is currently in Turkey with the Swedish national team for the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament. The Löwen newcomer played in the two games played so far against the Netherlands and Croatia and recorded an average of 13.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in his statistics. In addition to his assignments in the Swedish men’s national team, Barra Njie gained important experience in the course of his young career in the tactical second Spanish league LEB Gold, in the NBA G-League and in Sweden’s first league Basketligan. In the 2020/21 season, he was named “Rookie of the Year” in the basketball league with an average of 17.8 points, 4.9 assists and 6.2 rebounds and then switched to the NBA G-League. Here he played an average of eight minutes in 26 games for the Delaware Blue Coats (2.5 ppg), before he played gold for ISB Iraurgi in the LEB last season and had 11.1 points and 2.8 assists .

The new lion, who has a strong pull to the basket and is a powerful jumper, is expected in Braunschweig at the beginning of next week and says about his new challenge: “I’m really looking forward to the chance to play in one of the most competitive leagues in Europe in the future and I can hardly do it expect to measure myself every day in training and games. I was in Braunschweig about two years ago and trained with coach Jesús Ramírez and Dennis Schröder. It was a great experience for me to train with my idol and a high-level coach and to have a conversation with Nils Mittmann. I believe that my experience at that time was very advantageous, as I can assess what is to come in Braunschweig. And having Dennis close to the club is a blessing. Because he’s one of the best point guards you can ask and that helps me in my development.”
