Baltimore Orioles Pitcher Shintaro Fujinami Throws Fastest Pitch, Surpassing Shohei Ohtani

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Shintaro Fujinami made his fastest pitch on Sunday while helping his team win 2-0 against the New York Mets.

The Japanese right-hander’s fastball was measured at 102.6 miles (165 kilometers) per hour as he retired his second batter, DJ Stewart, during a perfect eighth inning at Camden Yards.

The ball eclipsed Shohei Ohtani’s fastball, known to be the fastest thrown by the MLB superstar.

Fujinami struck out two players and finished the game in just nine pitches, all for strikes, to earn his fourth hold as the Orioles extended their winning streak to four games.

Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde praised Fujinami after his performance, which marks a turnaround from his most recent critical outing last Wednesday in Toronto, where he entered a draw and the left with a three-point deficit.

“It’s the best game we’ve seen from Fuji. It was fantastic and dominant,” Hyde said.

Ohtani threw at a record speed of 165 mph in a 2016 game for Nippon Professional Baseball’s Nippon Ham Fighters, and Lotte Marines ace Roki Sasaki tied the mark last March.
