“Valmiera FC” will start in UEFA Champions League qualification

The first match of the qualification in Ljubljana will start at 21:00 Latvian time.

The return match in Valmiera is scheduled for July 19. In the second round of qualification, the winner of this pair will meet with Suva Reka “Ballkani” from Kosovo or the Bulgarian team “Ludogorets” from Razgrad.

“Valmiera” will play in the European Cup for the fourth time, but for the first time it will start in the Champions League qualification. Last season Valmieri competed in the Conference League qualification, where they lost 2:5 to the North Macedonian club Shkendija Skopje in the second round, but in 2021 they were eliminated in the first round of the Conference League qualification.

On the other hand, the Ljubljana team, which has won the local championship three times and will compete in the Champions League qualification for the third time, did not pass the qualification for the second round of the Conference League last year either, losing to Sfinta Georges “OSK Sepsi” from Romania in a penalty shootout with 2 :4.

In the 2018/2019 season, “Olimpija” beat RFS 4:3 in the first round of the UEFA European League qualification.

The 15 first-round pairing winners will advance to the second round. The 13 losers will continue the competition in the second qualifying round of the Champions League of the European Conference League, including the losers of the “Valmiera” – “Olimpija” duel, but the two losing teams, which were determined by the draw, will continue the competition in the third qualifying round of the Champions League of the European Conference League.

The final will be held on June 1, 2024 at Wembley Stadium in London.

Manchester City won the Champions League last season, beating Italian club Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul, winning the competition for the first time.
