Valencia to Host 17th Edition of FIFA Women’s Softball World Cup

Valencia. There are only two weeks left until the opening of the 17th edition of the FIFA Women’s Softball World Cup in Valencia. And it will do so at the Old Turia River Municipal Baseball and Softball Stadium, one of the event’s three international venues, July 18-22.

The capital of the Levant is preparing to host the top international competition of the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC), which will be organized by RFEBS (Royal Spanish Baseball and Softball Federation) in collaboration with FBSFACV (Federación de Béisbol, Softball and American Football for the Valencian Community).

A total of 6 teams, 19 games, 150 participants will participate in the World Cup. Valencia will host the first leg of the WSWC Youth World Cup Group B, in which 6 national teams: China, Cuba, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, South Africa and Spain will compete at the local Turia River baseball and softball stadium. It will be the 17th edition of the Women’s Softball World Cup, an international competition that began in 1965 and was held for the first time on national soil. Spain will appear for the first time as organizer of the absolute World Cup in this area.

Valencia launches a new format for the competition

This World Cup will be the first event to be held under a new competition system. The teams will play the group stage in Europe from 11 to 26 July in Fingal-Dublin, Ireland (Group A); Valencia, Spain (Group B); and Castione di Strada and Potreo, Italy (Group C). The finals will be held in Italy in the summer of 2024. With the new two-stage format, the World Cup finals will be played over two consecutive years, with the group stage the first year and the finals the following year.

18 national teams compete in the group stage divided into three groups and play a total of 57 matches between all teams. The top two teams in each group will advance to the finals, and at this initial stage, each group will start with one round. The top four teams from the round robin will advance to the playoffs where the top two teams will meet for a spot in the finals on the line. The loser of the first playoff match will face the third place winner against the fourth place finisher in the finals.

Four Valencians, called up for the World Cup finals

The national team, which will host one of the three World Cups to be held simultaneously – the other two, Ireland and Italy – begins its journey towards the next international challenge. To this end, you will be invited to Beatriz Alonso, Ariadna Cerda, Aníbel del C. Ramírez, Ana Sobrino, Alba Lopez, Yesi F. Sogo, Carla Segura, Surangel J. Ledesma, Mirichell Plessa, Yolan Denia, Carmen Caicoya, Maria Caicoya, Estibalez Alvarez, Candela Garcia, Oxa Modrigo and Raquel Rodrigo.

Among the players selected to play in this important international competition are four players from the Valencia region who will play the international tournament on home soil. They are Raquel Rodrigo (Saco Legnano), Yolan Denia (Sofaball Club Phoenix Valencia), Mertxell Plesa (Inox Sarono Team) and Candela García (CBS Anturcha).
