WINTERSWIJK – On Sunday 2 July, Badminton Club ‘t Pluumke’67 closed the season. This is always a pleasant afternoon and evening where all members who are present can participate in a barbecue. During this meeting, chairman Ronnie Steijlen took the floor to highlight one member in particular.
Shortly after his first words, everyone knew that it was about Niek Cornelissen. As chairman of ‘t Pluumke’67, Niek has represented the interests of the association on all kinds of fronts for ten years. This was reason for the board of Badminton Netherlands to award Niek a certificate and bronze medal of honor in recognition and appreciation for his commitment to the association and badminton sport in general.
Just when the current chairman Ronnie was about to hand over this medal, secretary Olaf Rikkers interrupted the ceremony with the announcement that there was someone else within ‘t Pluumke’67 who deserved this recognition and appreciation. Badminton Netherlands thought it was a recognition and token of appreciation that Ronnie Steijlen, the current chairman, was also awarded a certificate and bronze medal for his position as competition leader. He has done this for 25 years.
This was a big surprise for Ronnie because he knew that Niek would get this medal, but that he got one himself was unexpected. Both gentlemen are proud of this recognition and appreciation by Badminton Nederland and all members of ‘t Pluumke’67.
For Ronnie this was the crowning glory of a fantastic weekend, because on Saturday 1 July he and his team became National Champion Competition Teams 2023 in their division. A wonderful achievement and a historic moment for ‘t Pluumke’67. It is the first time in history that a team from ‘t Pluumke’67 becomes National champion.
