Physiatrist Pedro Caetano applauds the boost that the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and the District and Regional Associations (ADR) are giving to walking football.

In the opinion of this specialist, who is also linked to sports medicine, “walking football” is “an excellent form of physical activity because it is a sport that uses the necessary intensity, in a context of low risk of musculoskeletal injuries”, providing positive effects on Health and wellness.

Pedro Caetano evaluated the senior players who represented the Castelo Branco Football Association (AFCB) at the National Walking Football Festival and explained to Reconquista the benefits of this sport:

“There are studies of acceptable scientific quality that demonstrate that it can be effective in the treatment of hypertension disorders, in lowering cholesterol and blood glucose levels. It improves bone density and contributes to the reduction of fat mass”.

“It is an excellent activity for diabetics and for patients with osteopenia and, eventually, osteoporosis. In case of loss of bone mass, and ensuring that there is no contraindication to the practice of physical exercise, activity that involves load is more indicated than activities in an aquatic environment”, adds the Albicastrense doctor.
