The arbitrators have decided! Both Samsonov and Kurashev remain with their teams

It looked all kinds of things for Toronto, but in the end the ground is settled. Ilya Samsonov will stay for another year. While the problem with goalkeepers disappears, another one arises, namely with the salary cap. Philipp Kurashev, who will remain in Chicago, also received a new contract from an independent judge.

At an arbitration hearing, Ilya Samsonov was awarded a one-year contract worth $3.55 million. With the goalie being 26 years old and just a year away from unrestricted free agent status, a one-year contract was the only possible outcome.

In the arbitration proceedings, the club proposed a salary of $2.4 million, while the player demanded $4.9 million. So the judge chose the Solomonic solution, placing the amount in the middle.

While the resolution of contractual matters is a positive outcome, there are concerns about possible bitterness that has arisen between the two parties. This could also jeopardize Samsonov’s future in the team. If the goalkeeper continues to perform at a high level, he may want to take advantage of the increased demand and run elsewhere.

But that is still a long way off. The Maple Leafs have a more pressing problem to deal with, namely the salary situation. New general manager Brad Treliving still has a lot of work ahead of him. His team is currently $12.38 million over the salary cap.

Philipp Kurashev’s arbitration took place somewhat in his shadow.

The 23-year-old player will receive a two-year contract worth $2.25 million per year. The Blackhawks asked for a one-year contract worth $1.4 million, while Kurashev asked for a two-year deal worth $2.65 million.

Since this was player-selected arbitration, the Blackhawks had the right to choose the length of the contract after learning Kurashev’s salary, meaning they chose the two-year length. And that despite the fact that they initially wanted a one-year contract.

Kurashev’s versatility and ability to play almost anywhere in the lineup is certainly valuable, but despite playing a large amount of minutes last season, he didn’t put up the numbers expected of such a loaded player. He scored nine goals and 25 points in 70 games, up only slightly from six goals and 21 points the previous season.

While the salary cap is an issue in Toronto, Chicago is not bothered by the increased amount. To their credit, the Blackhawks have a similar amount to what they are over in Toronto.
