Swedish Basketball Star Jonas Jerebko Apologizes for Controversial Decision to Join Russian Club

“What I want to say to the Swedish people is that I apologize. I made a completely wrong decision, »said the 36-year-old basketball player in an interview with the Swedish news agency TT.

Jerebko only thought about basketball and getting in shape to possibly get back into the NBA. But he didn’t think about the political aspect of his decision at all.

Jerebko is considered the best basketball player Sweden has ever produced. The power forward has played for various clubs in the NBA for several years during his career. Most recently, the Swede was under contract with the Golden State Warriors around superstar Stephen Curry.

At the end of March 2022, the top Russian club CSKA Moscow presented Jerebko as a new signing. Just a month earlier, the Russian invasion of Ukraine took place. The move to Russia brought Jerebko a lot of criticism.

As a result, Jerebko was banned from his country’s national team by the Swedish basketball association SBBF until further notice. According to TT, he has been without a club since his contract in Moscow expired in June 2022.
