There have already been a few surprises in the second round of Wimbledon. Fourth in the world rankings Casper Ruud had to admit defeat to a British no-name and Oscar Otte was also eliminated. The Italian duel between Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego, meanwhile, went to Berrettini.

Casper Ruud was eliminated in the second round of the tennis classic at Wimbledon. The three-time Grand Slam finalist lost to British wildcard player Liam Broady 4:6,6:3,6:4,3:6,0:6 on center court on Thursday. On the other hand, things went better for the Russian Andrei Rublew, who prevailed against Aslan Karazew in four sets after an initial phase of weakness. Olympic champion Alexander Zverev won his opening match in three sets.

Ruud, number four in the world, held a 2-1 lead against Broady, who was 138 places behind. After that, the Norwegian completely lost control of the game and received the maximum penalty in the fifth round. Ruud has never progressed past the second round at Wimbledon.

Berrettini prevails against Sonego

On Wednesday morning, however, the game between Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego came to an end after having started on Tuesday evening but had to be interrupted due to rain. In the duel between the two Italians, Sonego was the real favorite against Berrettini, who was out of shape recently. But Berrettini tipped a set deficit against his good friend to a 3-1 win and shed a few tears of joy in the press conference that followed.

“Those were tough times for me, with injuries throwing me back a long way. I didn’t really enjoy my career anymore,” admitted the 27-year-old. “I was looking forward to this tournament, took a step backwards to make progress again.”

Wawrinka in the third round against Djokovic

Stan Wawrinka meanwhile played a duel with top favorite Novak Djokovic. In the second round duel with Tomas Etcheverry, who is 15 years his junior, the 38-year-old Swiss player had the upper hand with 6:3.4:6.6:4.6:2. It was the first time in eight years that Wawrinka has reached the third round of the Grand Slam tournament in London.
