Rudy Fernández Reveals Plans to Retire at 2024 Paris Olympics

During the presentation of the new sports development project in the town of Port de Pollença, Rudy Fernándezrenowned basketball player and captain of the Spanish team, revealed his plans to end his professional career at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Surrounded by enthusiasm and emotion, Fernández confessed that: “I promised my father that the Olympics would be my last tournament and I think it will be like that at a professional level; that’s where I hope to end my career in the Spanish team.”

At 38 years of age, the Mallorcan is among those shortlisted to represent Spain in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in Manila, under the guidance of coach Sergio Scariolo.

The versatile forward and shooting guard also highlighted that he has “one more year” left on his contract with Real Madrid, and mentioned that negotiations for his renewal are practically complete, demonstrating his continued commitment to the club before embarking on his last Olympic challenge.

“It may be that I reach the Olympics and that’s where I end up in my career in the Spanish team. I have one year left at Real Madrid, it’s signed, almost done (the contract) but the Olympics would be my last tournament,” Rudy insisted.

Regarding his inclusion in Scariolo’s pre-list for the World Cup, which will be held between August 25 and September 10 and in which point guard Lorenzo Brown is not present and Ricky Rubio is, the captain of the Spanish ‘La Armada’ said he was “very excited” to be able to fight again for a medal.

“I am really hopeful, very happy to be back in a call for the Spanish team at thirty-eight years old and that the coach continues to call me to be able to be in team dynamics and be able to help the youngest in the minutes that I am there”, affirmed Fernández.
