Remembering Jorge Berry: Televisa’s Outstanding Communicator with a Super Bowl Ring

Jorge Berry, a Mexican journalist, passed away this Thursday, July 13, at the age of 72 in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. He is recognized as one of Televisa’s most outstanding communicators in the last century and as the only one with a Super Bowl ring.

Berry was born in Mexico City, but since his father was American and he studied at the American College, he was immersed in the culture of the neighboring country, mainly rock music and NFL soccer.

Berry had a rock band with his friends from Colonia del Valle, but he changed music for journalism. He joined Telesistema Mexicano (before becoming Televisa) in 1973 thanks to the fact that he knew Mr. Eduardo Orvañanos.

Since he had extensive knowledge of NFL football from his father, he was put to call some games. Thus he began his career in the media.

After a brief stint at Imevisión, Jorge Berry moved to Los Angeles, California in the early 1980s. Coincidentally, the NFL Raiders franchise, of which he was a fan, moved to that city as well, and the general manager joined him. contacted to narrate in Spanish the team’s games at home. Since 1982 and for five seasons, the Mexican journalist traveled with the team.

In 1984, the Raiders won Super Bowl XVIII against the Washington Red Skins. Five months later, the team summoned Berry to hand out the championship rings that are given to the players and coaches. To his surprise, the franchise also had one manufactured with his name, considering him part of the staff.

But not only Berry took a great detail from the Raiders, since as the wives of the players and coaches were given a diamond necklace, his was also given one.

Jorge Berry, in addition to narrating NFL games, was a news presenter on Televisa for many years and had to announce live historical events, such as the fall of the Twin Towers in New York in 2001.
