Portuguese Women’s Football Team Begins Training in New Zealand Ahead of World Cup Debut

The Portuguese team headed, three days ahead of schedule, to what will be their official training center at least until the end of the group stage.

The Portuguese women’s football team held their first training session today at Mangere Center Park, in Auckland, New Zealand, eight days before their debut at the 2023 World Cup.

After having worked the first three days at Saint Kentigern College, the formation of the ‘quinas’ headed, three days ahead of schedule, for what will be their official training center at least until the end of the group stage.

Equipped with a gymnasium and a lawn, the home of the Manukau United Football Club, which competes in the Northern League of the New Zealand football championship, received the ‘navigators’, in a session open to the press in just the first 15 minutes.

At the beginning of the session, it was not possible to see striker Kika Nazareth, who was injured on July 1, in the 0-0 draw at home to European champions England, in a friendly, and has been out of the group since then.

The Benfica striker stayed in the gym during the open part of the session, with centre-half Sílvia Rebelo and midfielder Fátima Pinto also continuing to work separately.

After today’s training, the ‘quinas’ selection returns to work on Sunday, in a morning session in which they will face Norway, in a private match behind closed doors, with unlimited substitutions and without official character.

Even so, this will be the last Portuguese test before the debut in the 2023 World Cup, scheduled for July 23, at 19:30 local time (08:30 in Lisbon), in Dunedin, against the Netherlands, the current world runners-up .

After the clash with the Dutch, the Portuguese team faces the also newcomer Vietnam, in Hamilton, on July 27, also at 19:30 local time (08:30 in Lisbon), closing Group E against the United States, the winners of the last two World Cups, in Auckland, on August 1st, at 19:00 local time (08:00).

The ninth edition of the Women’s World Cup takes place from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
