Philipsen repeats victory in the Tour in a final marked by falls

MADRID, 4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Belgian cyclist Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Fenix) has achieved his second consecutive victory in the Tour de France on Tuesday after winning a disputed sprint in the fourth stage, 183 kilometers between Dax and Nogaro, with a final marked by falls.

After a very calm day, in which not even a break was formed until after the first 100 kilometres, Philipsen once again took advantage of an excellent launch from his Dutch teammate Mathieu Van Der Poel to be the fastest in a ‘finish’ photo sprint. on Australian Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny).

In a stage that the sprinters had marked on their calendars, the peloton left very calm, without any attempt to escape in the first kilometers. In fact, there were no script changes until kilometer 60, when the wind made an appearance and fans almost formed, but the favorites saved them masterfully.

In the intermediate sprint, Philipsen was the fastest, adding 20 points that place him as the leader of the regular green jersey, tied on points with the Frenchman Victor Lafay (Cofidis) and the Australian Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny).

With eighty kilometers to go, the French duo of Anthony Delaplace (Arkea Samsic) and Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroen Team) went ahead, but their minute margin was insufficient and the pace of Soudal Quick Step led the pack. He was superior to them, and neutralized them with twenty-five minutes to go.

With everyone gathered, the group launched at high speed to Nogaro, where in the last kilometer the Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal Quick Step), one of the favorites, crashed. At the finish Philipsen emerged from behind, who took advantage of Van der Poel’s launch to beat Ewan in a very tight way and achieve his fourth stage victory on the Tour, the second of this edition.

In the general classification, the Englishman Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) remains the leader with a six-second advantage over his teammate, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, the same difference as over his brother Simon Yates (Jayco Alula).

This Wednesday the mountain returns to the ‘Grande Boucle’ in the fifth stage with the Pyrenees, on a day in which the cyclists will travel 163 kilometers between the towns of Pau and Laruns. The runners will ascend two very hard passes such as Col de Soudet and Col de la Marie-Blanque.
