Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon on Thursday

The scenes that took place in Stuttgart a few weeks ago were not pleasant: Matteo Berrettini, the defending champion at the BOSS Open, was beaten by his Italian compatriot Lorenzo Sonego 1:6 and 2:6 in round one. And left the center court at TC Weißenhof with tears in his eyes. It was Berrettini’s first appearance after his second round win over Francisco Cerundolo in Monte Carlo, in between the 27-year-old had to pause again due to injury.

And now again against Sonego, this time on court 12 in Wimbledon. In a game that dragged on for several days due to the many interruptions in the rain. And in the end it ended well for the 2021 Wimbledon finalist. Berrettini won 6: 7 (5), 6: 3, 7: 6 (7) and 6: 3.

Zverev raves about Berrettini

Next opponent will be Alex de Minaur, number 15 of the tournament. And after that, Alexander Zverev, who trained extensively with Berrettini before the start of the event, would be waiting. And was impressed. Berrettini is in top form again, serving constantly at 235 km/h, explained Zverev with a serious expression. He really respects him.

With Lorenzo Musetti another Italian was successful on Thursday. The 6: 4, 6: 3 and 6: 1 against Jaume Munar meant for Musetti the entry into round three, where Hubert Hurkacz is waiting. Andrey Rublev is also in the last 32 after a four-set win against compatriot Aslan Karatsev.
