Introducing the NBA Cup: A New Tournament Format for the 2023-2024 Season

The NBA has officially presented within the framework of the Las Vegas Summer League what the format of the new competition that it will implement in the 2023-2024 season will be like: the NBA Cup.

The NBA Cup will be settled in the months of November and December and follows in the wake of the European cup tournaments, an idea that, as explained this weekend by the league commissioner, Adam Silverhas been hanging around the league office for 15 years“.

In the official presentation of the new NBA tournament, the composition of the 6 groups that will include the 30 teams has been announced. Of them, 3 groups are made up of teams from the Eastern Conference and another 3 from the Western Conference. They look like this:

Grupo 1: Sixers, Cavaliers, Hawks, Pacers y Pistons.Grupo 2: Bucks, Knicks, Heat, Wizards y Hornets.Grupo 3: Celtics, Nets, Raptors, Bulls y Magic.Grupo 4: Grizzlies, Suns, Lakers, Jazz y BlazersGrupo 5: Nuggets, Clippers, Pelicans, Mavericks y Rockets.Grupo 6: Kings, Warriors, Timberwolves, Thunder y Spurs.

The group draw has been structured through 5 drums per conference. In the first were those classified from 1 to 3 in the regular season; in 2 were the teams from 4 to 6; in 3 from 7 to 9; in the 4 from 10 to 12; and on 5 from 13 to 15.

There will be 7 competitive dates in November, on days 3, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24 and 28 (4 on Friday and 3 on Tuesday). Each team will play 4 matches, one with each rival in their group.

The first of each of the 6 groups and the best second of the Eastern groups and the best second of the Western groups will qualify. And those 8 teams will play the quarterfinals (December 4 and 5). The semifinals will be played on December 7 and the grand final on the 9th.

It will happen like in the playoffs: teams from the East and the West will not mix until the final.

Players on the winning team will walk away with $500,000; those of the finalist squad, 200,000; semifinalists will get $100,000; and the quarterfinalists will win 50,000.

The NBA continues to bet on innovation to revitalize the competition, just as it did with the play-in, a change that is being successful.
