Jan Thielmann was injured in the run-up to the botched U-21 European Championships in Georgia and Romania. The dream of taking part in the tournament suddenly burst – and those responsible in Cologne are trying to build up the 21-year-old midfielder as best they can.
“If you get injured again after a season like this the day before the U-21 European Championship starts, and then like that, we can only imagine what’s going on in the boy’s mind,” FC coach Steffen Baumgart felt with his professional , before completing the first session of the new season with the healthy players.
And the mood at Thielmann shouldn’t change that quickly either. According to the forecast, the youngster will have to sit out until autumn due to a muscle injury. “It will definitely take a while, but we are firmly convinced that he will come back,” Baumgart distributes verbal pats.
Thielmann had to take a long break last season due to various muscle injuries and a viral disease. In 2022/23 he played a total of 29 competitive games for Cologne (two goals), since his arrival in the cathedral city in 2017 there have been 101 competitive games in his résumé (seven goals).
Tigges runs, Katterbach stops by
In addition to Thielmann, Steffen Tigges and Noah Katterbach were also missing for the canter. Although the striker is running again after his shoulder injury, it is not enough for team training. Katterbach, meanwhile, tore his cruciate ligament during his six-month loan to HSV at the end of April and is still working on his return. Of course, this cannot yet be foreseen.
