French Basketball Prospect Victor Wembanyama Struggles in NBA Summer League Debut with San Antonio Spurs

France’s great basketball prospect Victor Wembanyama donned a San Antonio Spurs uniform for the first time on Friday night, and let’s just say the youngster was very hard on himself.

The Summer League debut of the one who was called with the very first round to speak in the most recent NBA Draft was not very representative of his enormous talent. Wembanyama played 27 minutes but only had nine points.

It was mostly his throws that weren’t able to hit the target. He only managed two of his 13 attempts. He made up for it by finding the net on his four free throws.

“I didn’t really know what I was doing on the field, but I’m trying to learn,” he admitted in an interview after the match, remaining very honest.

Wembanyama feels he has to get used to the tough pace of the NBA.

“I think I have a lot of physical conditioning to do. Especially with our style of play, we run a lot. It’s very tiring. Even if it was only a 40 minutes tonight [vendredi]when I left my place, I was always tired and exhausted”, he mentioned to the ESPN network.

The Spurs fortunately won this game 78 to 68 against the Charlotte Hornets. It allowed to put a balm on the difficult beginnings of Wembanyama. It’s only one game, so he’ll have time to progress.

“In general, I’m happy that we won, admitted the former Metropolitans 92. There is no better way to achieve a first. I’m trying to learn for the next game.”

The Spurs will face the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.
