Former Late Night Presenter Takes on Wheelchair Basketball in ‘En tu piel’

On this occasion, the program challenges Jorge Pueyo, the former presenter of the Aragonese late night show ‘A Escampar La Boira’, to “put yourself in the shoes” of sportsman David Anaya.

David has been playing chair basketball for more than 20 years, almost all of it in Adapta Zaragoza, a 1st division team that spent 12 seasons in the Honor Division, in the highest category, reaching 4th place in the national league.

The guest has played basketball since he was little because his father was a coach. In the program, to put himself in David’s shoes, he will have to learn to row -manage the wheelchair- with dexterity and speed, and throw the ball with the necessary aim and strength.

The rules of wheelchair basketball are practically the same as those of the modality on foot: the court has the same measurements, the scoring system is identical and the basket is at the same height, 3.05 m. which means an additional effort for the players, who have to develop balance, and great muscles in the shoulders, arms and back, to move the chair, and reach the basket with momentum. The difference is that there are no doubles, players can catch the ball and bounce it as many times as they want. What cannot be done is give more than two impulses in the chair without throwing it. The steps are not the same either, in chair basketball every time they touch the hoop twice you have to dribble the ball.

David Anaya began playing in a wheelchair at the age of 17, when he had an accident that caused a spinal cord injury. He is now 41 years old and basketball is his life, he loves it. Apart from having fun he keeps you active, mentally healthy and allows you to unwind and reset.

For him it is important that children and adults see the abilities of all people and not so much the disabilities, an idea that he tries to instill in his two little twins, when they go to cheer on the field. The athlete wants people to understand that sport is for everyone, regardless of their disability, and together with the ADAPTA entity, they carry out awareness campaigns on this issue in more than 170 schools throughout Aragon.

This chapter has had the collaboration of the entity Somos Adapta, the ADAPTA Zaragoza Sports Club, and the CDM Pepe Garcés of the Zaragoza City Council.

‘En tu piel’, on Saturdays at 1:50 p.m. on Aragón TV.
