Numerous matches were postponed to Wednesday due to persistent rain. These include Dominic Stricker’s appearances against the Australian Alexei Popyrin (ATP 93), Marc-Andrea Hüsler’s against the Japanese lucky loser Yosuke Watanuki (116) and Viktorija Golubic’s against the Czech Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (WTA 77).
Since only Center Court and Court 1 are covered, many players had to be patient. Céline Naef, whose game against the Russian Anastassja Potapova (23) was interrupted at 3: 6, 3: 3, will only be back in action on Wednesday. Stan Wawrinka (88) meets the winner of the game Tomas Etcheverry (ARG/32) against Bernabe Miralles (ESP/53) in the evening. The organizers had to postpone a total of 69 matches. (sg.)

World number one Carlos Alcaraz reached the second round without much effort. The 20-year-old Spaniard defeated Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 6-2, 7-5. He only had a few difficulties in the third set. After 1:53 hours, Alcaraz, who recently won the preparatory tournament in Queens, converted his first match point on Court 1, which was covered because of the rain. For Chardy (36) it was the last game of his tennis career. The Frenchman had already announced in advance that Wimbledon would be his last tournament.

Crowd favorite Andy Murray easily and easily mastered his opening hurdle. The 36-year-old clearly won against his British colleague Ryan Peniston 6: 3, 6: 0, 6: 1 and was happy about the presence of Roger Federer: “The last time I played on Center Court and watched Roger that was at the Olympic Games in 2012 and he sat in the box of his compatriot Stan Wawrinka and was against me. So it was nice to see that he clapped a few times after good balls from me today.”
Defending women’s champion Jelena Rybakina had a little more trouble than Alcaraz and Murray. The 24-year-old from Kazakhstan needed three sets against American Shelby Rogers to advance to the second round 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Last year’s finalist Ons Jabeur from Tunisia easily won 6:3, 6:3 against Magdalena Frech from Poland. (DPA/heg)

In her first game in the Wimbledon main draw, Simona Waltert (WTA 116) is clearly defeated by Czech Marie Bouzkova (WTA 33) in two sets 1: 6, 4: 6.
In the first set, the Churer had no chance. Only in the second set was Waltert, who mastered the qualification for the Grand Slam tournament without losing a set, able to flash her class. But after 76 minutes and three match points saved, the 22-year-old Swiss had to admit defeat to her Czech opponent. (pka)

Belinda Bencic (WTA 14) survives the first round at Wimbledon. At the start, the eastern Swiss prevailed against the British Katie Swan (WTA 147) in two sets 7: 5, 6: 2.
In the first set, Bencic, who had only played one game since April due to leg and shoulder problems, was still 2: 3 behind with a break. After that, however, the 26-year-old found her rhythm better and turned the game in her favor. In the second set, Bencic had her opponent completely under control. She used the first match point after 95 minutes. (pka)

Because the roof over Center Court was closed too late when it started to rain, the game was interrupted for more than an hour. The lawn in the most famous tennis stadium in the world had become too wet to be able to quickly continue the match under the closed roof.
Djokovic lent a hand himself and wiped the lawn with a towel. In addition, tournament employees tried to dry the wet areas with leaf blowers. At the time of the stoppage, Djokovic had just won the first set.
After the break, Djokovic didn’t have much trouble and converted his third match point after 2:11 hours. It was the 29th win in a row at Wimbledon for the Serbs. (DPA/pka)

Even in the fourth attempt, Jil Teichmann (WTA 121) remains without a win in Wimbledon. The 25-year-old loses against Magda Linette (24) from Poland in a game with a break in the rain 3: 6, 2: 6. Teichmann kept up well until the game was interrupted at 3:4. After that, she didn’t do much. World number 33 at the beginning of the year, the native of Biel has since dropped out of the top 100. At the US Open she will probably have to fight her way through the qualification. (sg.)

The world number 1 Iga Swiatek easily reached the second round of the grass classic in Wimbledon. The 22-year-old Pole defeated China’s Zhu Lin 6-1, 6-3 in London on Monday. The French Open winner converted her first match point after 80 minutes. The game on Court 1 was briefly interrupted due to rain and then continued under closed roof.
Swiatek had to give up last week at the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg due to being unwell before their semifinals. But at the start of Wimbledon, the number one in the tennis world made a good impression and was never in danger. “Luckily it wasn’t food poisoning. I feel good, »she said after her victory. (DPA)

According to the English media, Roger Federer will be celebrated on Tuesday for his successes in Wimbledon. He is scheduled to appear on Center Court at 1.15pm local time before the first match. This year marks the 20th anniversary of his first of eight Wimbledon titles. It makes perfect sense that it will be celebrated on Tuesday. This Monday, defending champion Novak Djokovic opened the center court against Argentinian Pedro Cachin (ATP 68).

On Sunday, Federer made a big appearance at the Coldplay concert in Zurich’s Letzigrund. He was brought on stage to shake a rattle and was clearly enjoying himself. Singer Chris Martin had announced him as an “original band member” who then jumped off to pursue a tennis career. (sg.)

Shortly before his opening match, last year’s finalist Nick Kyrgios canceled his start. “I did my best to be ready after my surgery and to step onto the courts at Wimbledon,” the Australian wrote on his social network pages. On his comeback, however, he felt pain in his wrist, and the injury turned out to be a torn ligament.
“I tried everything to be able to play and I’m disappointed to say I just didn’t have enough time to make it to Wimbledon.” The 28-year-old should have met Belgian David Goffin on Monday. It is not yet clear who will replace him.

Last year, Kyrgios surprisingly reached the final in Wimbledon, where he only lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets after a hard fight. Then he was stopped by knee problems and had to pause for almost nine months.
The Australian Open and the French Open took place without Kyrgios. He only celebrated his comeback in Stuttgart in mid-June, but lost in the first round. He then canceled his participation in Halle and also withdrew from Mallorca shortly before the start of the tournament. (DPA)

The assignments of the eight Swiss men and women are spread out nicely over the first two days: four are on duty today, Monday and tomorrow. One can especially look forward to the appearances of Belinda Bencic and Stan Wawrinka. Both did not play matches on grass before Wimbledon for different reasons. Bencic struggled with a shoulder injury after the French Open, Wawrinka put in an intensive training block with fitness trainer Pierre Paganini in order to be fit for the demanding second half of the season. “No sports,” said Winston Churchill when asked why he stayed so fit into old age. Aryna Sabalenka has now slightly modified the quote from the most famous British statesman: “No politics.” Before answering the first questions, the Belarusian made it clear that she will not be talking about politics at Wimbledon. “I’m only talking about tennis,” she said. “Please respect that. If you have political questions, you can contact the WTA or the tournament. Then they can send you the transcript of my answers from previous tournaments.”
Questions? Yes, but please not to war: Aryna Sabalenka.

The 25-year-old felt “threatened” in Paris by unpleasant questions about the war in Ukraine or her relationship with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and skipped two press conferences, now she has cut off any discussions from the outset. It’s a shame that the Ukraine war can’t just be canceled like that. (sg.)

Jérémy Chardy has come full circle. The Frenchman, who won the 2005 Wimbledon junior tournament, is retiring at the same venue aged 36. He had skipped Roland Garros to be fit for it. What will probably be his last game presents him with another big task: he plays against world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz. (sg.)
