Wilander Questions Holger Rune’s Mentality in Big Matches: Does He Have What It Takes to Win Grand Slams?

As an example, the seven-time Grand Slam winner named the Monte Carlo final against Andrey Rublev. Rune had won the first set in this match, but then lost it (7: 5, 2: 6, 5: 7). “He should have defended himself better against Daniil Medvedev in the final in Rome (5: 7, 5 :7, editor’s note),” Wilander continued: “At the Australian Open this year, he most likely shouldn’t have lost to Rublev. I think he’s physically and tactically good and knows how to play on grass plays.”

However, the Swede sees some question marks “when it comes to nerves in big games”.

“Is he maybe too excited when he fights big fights? Does he get cramps like Carlos Alcaraz in his hands and legs? Does Rune have a somewhat dubious mentality in big fights?” Wilander asked himself in an exclusive interview.

Wilander: Rune still has to prove himself

“I say he’s a much better player when the pressure is on his opponent and not on him,” said the 58-year-old. He can therefore not yet say “that Rune has what it takes to win several Grand Slams because we have not yet seen this part of his mentality”.

The 20-year-old has all the technical skills to achieve this. “He knows how to play the different shots that you need. But mentally I still have to see Holger win a big tournament, how he beats a big player when the pressure is really high and you expect him to do well cuts off,” says Wilander.

Record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic already beat Rune this year (in the quarter-finals in Rome 6: 2, 4: 6, 6: 2, editor’s note). But Wilander clarified: “Novak wasn’t really present for part of the game. So Rune still has a few things to prove, not to me but probably to themselves when it comes to the big points and the big games.”
