The Special Olympics Games 2023: A Global Celebration of Athletes with Disabilities in Berlin

The Special Olympics Games will take place in Berlin from June 17th to 25th, 2023. For the first time in history, the games will be played in Germany. The Special Olympics Games have many parallels to the Olympic Games, athletes from all over the world compete against each other in different sports. The only difference to the Olympic Games is that the participants live with mental disabilities and multiple disabilities. Around 7000 athletes take part in the games.

Special Olympics Games 2023: broadcast on free TV & stream

Not just a single broadcaster, but eleven different media companies are reporting on the Special Olympics World Games. ARD, ZDF, RTL, ProSieben/Sat1, Sky, Sport1, Prime Video, Meta, DAZN, Bild and Deutsche Telekom have joined forces to provide media coverage for this sporting event. In some cases there will even be live reporting directly from the venue: the opening ceremony was broadcast on rbb, Sky and sportdeutschland.tv. Live reporting is also planned for the closing ceremony and for 13 of the 26 sports. The other sports are broadcast in summaries.

Schedule Special Olympics Games 2023: The dates at a glance

Athletes from all over the world will duel at the Special Olympics Games 2023. Most of the sports are divided into three parts. Into the classification, the group stage and the final and award ceremony. The classification tests how good the athletes are and thus determines which ones should compete against each other. The group phase then proceeds as usual, during which the athletes can qualify for the final. After the final, there will be an award ceremony for the respective sport.

Special Olympics: Ball Types Group Stage begins

On the third day of competition of the Special Olympics World Games, various types of ball games enter the group phase. In addition to basketball and volleyball in the Messe Berlin, the handball players in the Horst-Korber-Zentrum and the tennis players on the SC Brandenburg facility will also be going into the games on Tuesday in the fight for a place in the final.

Venues of the Special Olympics 2023

The Special Olympics 2023 will be held in Berlin. Venues are spread across the city, ranging from Messe Berlin in the west to popular locations in the city center and Grünau in south-east Berlin.

The starting point of the Special Olympics marks the opening ceremony with the solemn torch relay. The entry of the delegation is just one of many highlights of the opening ceremony.
