Local Hero: Perugia’s Alessandro Bicorgni Triumphs at A2 Judo Championships

PERUGIA – A few days after a European bronze won in the blue jersey, Alessandro Bicorgni achieved another great triumph, who also shone in his native Perugia. The sixteen-year-old athlete in fact placed on the top step of the podium in the prestigious competitions of the A2 Judo Fijlkam Absolute Championships, which were staged in an intense two days at the PalaBarton in Pian di Massiano, together with two other events. The flagship event, which began on Saturday, also saw Bicorgni (of the Poeti del judo company) among many, who fulfilled his dream of sewing the tricolor to his chest in his own city. In the 66kg category, he triumphed after an impeccable race, which ended with a spectacular ippon that thrilled those present in the stands of the PalaBarton, a temple of martial arts for two days. Second place for Manuel Misoaga (Lazio), third for Mattia Zolesi (Emilia Romagna). Many other competitions for each category were held on the PalaBarton tatami, with athletes arriving in the city from all over Italy. At club level, the first day of competitions was enriched by the sixth place in the rankings achieved by I poeti del Judo di Stefano Luca and Poeta, the teachers of the very young Alessandro who is celebrating double after the triumphs of Croatia a few days ago. Also in the 66kg category, Bicorgni shone at the European Cup Junior in Rijeka, a very high level competition part of the International Judo Union circuit, coming out with a very important bronze medal. Already the 2023 Italian champion in the cadet class, Alessandro had achieved excellent results in the Iju circuit also last year, placing fifth at the European Cadets Cup in Coimbra, always in the blue jersey. A positioning that earned him participation in the Eyof 2023, the European Youth Olympic Festival. In short, the growth path of the Perugian athlete continues, reaching the podium also at home on the occasion of the event strongly supported by the Umbro Fijlkam Regional Committee of president Andrea Arena. His commitment and that of the members of the committee, starting with Roberto Camilli (president of the Judo Sector) made it possible to bring the judo championships back to the city, or rather to Umbria, after more than fifteen years of absence. An effort that paid off “giving immense joy to the entire regional movement”, comments the federation which also received the favor of the public for the event, numerous in the stands of the PalaBarton. Broadening the lens to the other results, it is worth highlighting the great challenge between Nuova Florida and Akiyama Settimo Torinese: in the end it was the Lazio team that won the lead in the ranking for men’s clubs. This is how it also went in the women’s sector: the Lazio team, in fact, after the clear success among the men, granted an encore by imposing itself at the top of the women’s ranking with 20 points, then finding itself on the club podium together with Europaradise and Judo Virtus, second and third respectively, although with the same score (16).
It should be remembered that the A2 races were not staged at PalaBarton. For the public present in the stands, the two days were a tempting occasion: the program also included the Italian Fisdir Championship and the 3rd Ernesto Giaverina Youth Criterium, which saw over four hundred young judokas take to the mats of the arena. A sign of the continuous growth of the movement in the area.
