Portuguese Lawyer Gonçalo Almeida Appointed as FIFA Judge for Chamber of Agents

The Portuguese lawyer Gonçalo Almeida was appointed today as a judge of the Chamber of Agents of the FIFA Football Tribunal (Agents Chamber of the FIFA Football Tribunal). This is the first time that a Portuguese lawyer, independent of any stakeholder of the football industry, is appointed to the FIFA Court, in a process that involved several dozen applications submitted by the various entities responsible for football worldwide.

Gonçalo Almeida will assume the functions for a period of 4 years (2023-2027), and the Chamber of Agents, established following the new Regulation of FIFA Agents, will have jurisdiction over disputes of an international nature between FIFA football agents and players, coaches, clubs, federations and/or leagues.

The former FIFA lawyer (2001-2006) and founding partner of Sociedade de Advogados Almeida, Dias & Associados was one of the 24 judges appointed to the newly created Chamber of Agents of the FIFA Football Court, and his candidacy was initially suggested by FIFA’s own administration and supported by the Portuguese Football Federation.

«I received this nomination with great pride and satisfaction, and I cannot fail to thank FIFA and the FPF, the latter in the person of its president, Dr. Fernando Gomes, for the unsurpassable support they gave me, recognizing in me the necessary skills to exercise such a position of enormous responsibility. In a way, I believe this is a public recognition of my professional career in the area of Sports Law, a challenge that I will embrace with the utmost commitment and professionalism with which I have always guided myself in the practice of Law», reacted Gonçalo Almeida.
