Jared “MontyDey” Montgomery Clinches Victory in Esports Olympic Series Archery Tournament

Jared “MontyDey” Montgomery was crowned the first winner of the Esports Olympic Series To Tic Tac Bow (archery).

Archery opened with a group stage, from which MontyDey, Mark “La1MJT” Thurston, David “dchan” Chan et Takebayashi “ZouSenpai” Kyosuke also pulled out to advance to the semi-finals.

In this game, which is a version of Tic Tac Toe but played with virtual bows and arrows, players must outperform their opponent to capture a ‘square’ or target. A player can get up to 110 points on a target.

The game involves both strategy, players having to decide which target to aim for if they have a chance of blocking or attacking, as well as elements specific to archery such as managing the “wind” .

The semi-finals pitted two favorites against each other: American MontyDey and Briton La1MJT. In other words, one of the most serious contenders for the title was not going to participate in the grand final.

MontyDey won two sets to one in a thrilling match, before his compatriot Dchan defeated ZouSenpai by the same scoreline in the other semi-final.

The first round of the final, contested to the best of five, came to an end, the nine targets of the panel having been hit, Dchan seeing his stopwatch stop with one second remaining. However, he kept his composure to hold on to MontyDey and win 520-421, neither opponent managing to score three points in a row.

MontyDey immediately fought back in rounds 2 and 3, scoring three times on his first three shots. However, Dchan stayed alive, scoring three times in just three rounds, and sent the grand final in the deciding set.

At the end of an ultra-tight last round, it was finally MontyDey who won, hitting the bull’s eye to ensure his three shots in a row.

In the best-of-three small final, ZouSenpai and La1MJT each won a round. In the last, decisive, ZouSenpai obtained 108 points and offered himself the possibility of winning in two different ways, forcing La1MJT to take his square. The latter only gained 104 points, giving ZouSenpai the bronze medal.
