Some orcas have spread panic between the participants of the Ocean Race by attacking the boats of Team JAJO when approaching Gibraltar and of the Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team. After a few “terrifying” moments, they managed to resume navigation.
The attack occurred this Thursday when Team JAJO was heading to Genoa and confusion spread among the crew. “Fortunately, the team and the boat have escaped unscathed», detailed the organization itself.
“Three killer whales came right at us and started hitting the rudders. It is impressive to see them, very beautiful animals, but it has also been a dangerous moment. We lowered the sails and slowed down as fast as possible and luckily after a few attacks they were gone… It was a scary time», detailed 20 minutes after the attack the captain, Jelmer van Beek.
After pausing the navigation during that time, the VO65 of Team JAJO was able to return to the competition and they finished the day in third positionjust behind the Windwhisper Racing Team and the Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team.
