Honduras National Team Faces Mexico in Gold Cup Opener at NRG Stadium

2023-06-25

The Honduras National Team begins its activity this Sunday in the Gold Cup against Mexico at the NRG Stadium in the city of Houston (6:00 PM), a venue with capacity for 72,220 spectators.

Those led by Diego Vázquez are optimistic in being able to defeat an Aztec team that has been generating doubts since the beginning of the year. The ‘Tri’ will debut in the competition with Jaime Lozano as the new DT after the sudden dismissal of Diego Cocca after losing the League of Nations with a review included against ‘Team USA’.

“For us it is an illusion and a prestigious tournament, we are clear about it, we train it during the week and on the 11th that is it. We analyzed the rival taking into account the change of coach but nothing more, we have a lot of respect for the other team, but we have to see our team”, mentioned the Bicolor coach in the previous press conference.

Honduras is not going through its best moment, although Diego insists that his team “is under construction”, so they hope to surprise and get the first three points in a group B that also includes Haiti and Qatar.

Our Sunday cover in Diario DIEZ. Diego Vázquez already has the 11 that he will launch against Mexico.

Mexico, for its part, wants to change course and reconcile with the fans by starting this competition on the right foot. They seek to retake the leadership of Concacaf in the most important tournament in the area.

Apparently the road would be easy for the Aztecs, but the performance in recent months makes it doubtful that it is; Jaime Lozano began his stage as coach by being clear with the players and told them that “I believe in them” and in his coaching staff to bring the situation to light and regain confidence.

It should be remembered that in the last confrontation between the two teams that took place in March 2022, the Bicolor fell by the minimum (1-0). They previously met four times: Mexico 3-0 Honduras (October 2021), Mexico 3-0 Honduras (July 2021), Mexico 0-0 Honduras (June 2021) and Honduras 3-2 Mexico (October 2017).
