European Games, third edition kicks off in Krakow – Sport

(ANSA) – ROME, JUNE 20 – The 2023 European Games were officially opened with the presentation conference held in Krakow, the city where most of the competitions scheduled in the Polish event will be held. From tomorrow, 21 June (day of the opening ceremony) until 2 July, around 7,000 athletes from 48 different nations will compete in 28 disciplines, including padel, making its debut in a ‘five circles’ competition. Italy presents itself with 331 elements, of which 46 from athletics (also present in extremis Gianmarco Tamberi, Olympic gold medalist in the high jump).

The president of the Commission of the European Olympic Committee, Hasan Arat, underlined that the third edition of the European Games is “the biggest sporting event taking place in Europe after London 2012. Many competitions will allow to qualify for the next Olympics. The best European athletes I’m here and that makes us proud.”

Italy will try to improve on the fourth place in the Minsk 2019 medal table (41 medals), also given that Russia and Belarus are excluded from the competition (respectively first and second in the medal table four years ago). Polish Sports Minister Kamil Bortniczuk reiterated that it is “a privilege to host the Games here in Krakow and throughout the region. We welcomed migrants from Ukraine with an unprecedented dramatic wave due to the war. It seemed we had to choose whether to welcome these people or dedicate ourselves to the organization of the European Games: however, we managed to complete both missions”. (HANDLE).
