Dario Gjergja Continues as Head Coach of Belgian Lions with New Assistants

“After an evaluation and a lot of discussions, we felt that the experience of a coach like Dario remained the best option in the short term, reacted Jacques Stas, manager of the Lions, in a press release. The main idea is to continue the work of transmission between two generations, while aiming for good results. The future of Belgian basketball looks promising with a good mix between experienced players and young talents knocking at the door.”

An intergenerational transition on which Dario Gjergja also insists: “We will aim for a new qualification for the Euro while making sure to introduce the young generation. I am proud to be able to continue the adventure with the Belgian Lions until 2025.”

Two new assistants

For his last contract at the head of the national team, Gjergja will now be assisted by Kristof Michiels, coach of Mechelen and elected coach of the year in 2022, and Raymond Westphalen, who stood out at Limburg United with whom he won the Belgian Cup 2022. They replace Fred Wilmot and Gaëlle Bouzin. Alain Ptak replaces Peter Sempels as a physiotherapist.

All this staff will soon have the opportunity to start work since the next deadline is looming in a few weeks. The Belgian Lions will take part in the Olympic prequalification tournament from August 13 to 20 in Istanbul. Belgium were drawn into Group D along with Croatia, the Netherlands and Sweden.
