The documentary about the life of the Red Devils, with one striking cliffhanger from Lukaku: “Do I have to give up something?” | Red Devils

The Red Devils are also jumping on the documentary train. After many other top athletes, Romelu Lukaku, Thibaut Courtois and Axel Witsel give an insight into their lives. In the four-part series “One for All” from streaming service Amazon, our internationals look back extensively at the World Cup in Qatar, among other things. We took our popcorn and felt (for a moment) sweat break out at one particular passage.

Life as it is… the Red Devils.

Thibaut Courtois rightly shows off his impressive trophy cabinet, talks even more proudly about his children and proves his winning mentality in a party game with his girlfriend Mishel.

Romelu Lukaku talks about his difficult childhood, the unbreakable bond with his family and the impact of a first serious injury of his career.

And Axel Witsel shares the importance of his faith and considers the challenges in his career.

Six months in the footsteps of our three most iconic Red Devils resulted in unique footage for the documentary “One for All”. Before, during and after the World Cup in Qatar.

Cliffhanger Lukaku

Spoiler Alert!

We can already tell you: Romelu Lukaku would provide the most striking statement.

In the first episode, the record shooter questions his future with the national team. Doubts that arose mainly due to the hamstring injury that has kept Lukaku aside for months this season and which prevented him from living up to expectations at the World Cup.

“Maybe I should take more rest so that I can play longer,” Lukaku says in the documentary. “I started so early and have been playing at the highest level for thirteen years. Many guys don’t even make it.”

“Look, I love football, but are so many matches good for my body and the mental? A few days of rest in September would do me good.”

You know, Vincent Kompany was 33 when he quit, just out of the blue. Finished. I don’t want that, I don’t want my body to run out.

Romelu Lukaku

Nevertheless, Lukaku, who reveals that he now has two sons, emphasizes that it has always been a pleasure to play for the national team.

“It’s an honour. That’s why I always came to the Devils, even when I was on the bench for 90 minutes. I had injections and blood drawn just to go. But to this day I bear the consequences of that And that makes me think…”

“You know, Vincent Kompany was 33 when he quit. Just out of nowhere. Done. I don’t want that, I don’t want my body to be exhausted. Because I know I weigh 102 kilos, constantly sprint and get kicks. Then you think me: should I give up something or not?”

It’s a cliffhanger that counts.

But in the last episode, the Champions League finalist reassures the nation (for a while). Because then Lukaku emphasizes that the intention is to be at the European Championship in Germany next year.

“Hopefully with all the guys who are still there. Then we will have 3 European Championships and World Cups together. We happy.

Understanding of Courtois

Sporza was able to speak with two of the three protagonists in the documentary and presented Courtois with the above passage from his colleague.

The top goalkeeper nodded understandingly: “All factors of such an international match together are a strain on your body. You know, if we are 2 to 3 percent less good, you immediately feel it at the highest level. A pain in the calf, the arm, leg… But there are two more matches waiting in June. It’s hard to get rid of that load.”

In my head I want to play one more world championship.

Thibaut Courtois

But ambitious as he is, Courtois would like to continue with the national team for a long time.

“In my head I want to play one more world championship,” he assures. “I don’t want to end with the tournament in Qatar. The World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico seems to me to be a very nice experience. After that we’ll see how it is with the motivation and physique. (laughs) Or maybe there is already a new talent poised in goal.”

Courtois also underlined the heavy mental pressure that comes with top sport.

“When you flatter or miss an opportunity, it is quickly magnified on social media these days. The impact is big – we are not robots, are we? We are people with a family and a thick skin, but we can’t handle everything.”

The four-part documentary ‘One for All’ can be viewed on Amazon streaming service from May 25.
