The English Football League (England’s Football League, EFL in English) announced this Friday that Wigan will start the 2023/24 season with eight negative points, as punishment for the non-provision due to an amount in banking to support the wage bill monthly fee, a decision which the club must appeal.
24th and last in the Championship (English second division) in the season that, at that level, has already ended, Wigan were relegated to League One (third division) and saw the EFP Independent Disciplinary Commission punish them for the following season for not properly provision the bank guarantees required by the deadline, which expired on the 24th of May.
The club had already been punished with starting the next season with four negative points, for failing to deposit the guarantees also in March of the current year, a penalty to which, according to the EFL sentence of this day, four more points are added: it will therefore start the season with eight minus points.
In a statement released on its website, the historic Wigan Athletic reacted. “We are extremely disappointed with this decision. The club has been very transparent with the EFL, which has had clear visibility on the sum of around eight figures to finance what was left of the season and the whole of next season. The club will now consider its options, including a possible legal response, and will not make any further comments.”
