Luton Still Use Kenilworth Road in the Premier League, Is It Worth It?

Luton Town is determined to continue using Kenilworth Road to compete in the Premier League. Although many parties doubted the quality of The Hatters cage.

Luton Town managed to seal a promotion ticket to the Premier League next season. This certainty was obtained after The Hatters won the play-off match against Covetry City 6-5 on penalties at Wembley, Saturday (27/5). The winner of the match must be determined via penalties after a 1-1 draw for 120 minutes.

This is the first time Luton has appeared in the Premier League. They have played in the highest caste of the English League but at that time it was not called the Premier League. The last time they performed in the highest caste was in 1991-1992.

However, after Luton confirmed promotion, the question arose whether they could use Kenilworth Road as their home ground in the Premier League. The reason is, the Luton cage is far from modern and looks outdated.

The stadium, which was built in 1905, only has a capacity of 10,356 spectators. Kenilworth Road is also very minimalist in the middle of a residential area. The stairs leading to the stands are even attached to the yard of the residents around the stadium.

Although many are doubtful about holding Premier League matches, it turns out that Kenilworth Road has the opportunity to remain the home ground for Luton next season. Luton is ready to spend £10 million to make Kenilworth Road fit for a Premier League match.

In terms of capacity Kenilworth Road has passed the eligibility to hold Premier League matches. This is because the Premier League requires a club cage with a minimum capacity of 5,000 spectators with 2,000 seats.

The problem for Luton with their use of Kenilworth Road in the Premier League is lighting and the availability of additional space for VAR, broadcasting and executive guests. This is what Luton will be pursuing to build so that Kenilworth Road is eligible to hold Premier League matches.

“We have no complaints about it. If there is anything that can be done, we will do it,” said Luton CEO, Gary Sweet, quoted from the Independent.
