Match practice is still what Dominic Thiem needs most in his comeback project. One of the reasons why the Austrian is taking part in two tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour in Mauthausen this week and in Bordeaux next week. “I had the second round in Monte Carlo, the quarter-finals in Munich and the second round in Madrid. So I haven’t had that many matches now,” explained Thiem before the start of the event in Upper Austria, where he will start in first place against a qualifier.

Strictly speaking, there are 19 games that Dominic Thiem has played this season, seven of which went in his favor. That is currently enough for position 96 in the ATP world rankings, which of course does not meet the requirements of the US Open champion of 2020. But Thiem now knows that good things take time. In Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh, he brought an accelerator into the team a few weeks ago. One with whom Thiem can exchange ideas in German. An important factor, as Thiem had already emphasized during his performances in Munich.

At that time there was the second scan between Thiem and Ebrahimzadeh, now it seems to be a longer collaboration. “I definitely want to continue because I see the progress and because I want to continue doing this for the next few weeks and months. If we train like this for six months, a year, I want to see where I stand. That can only be a good thing.”

The next big highlight is in Roland Garros, Dominic Thiem showed himself in Madrid in a form that makes him a very unpleasant opponent for all other players. After that, the plan is actually in place. “I’ll play Wimbledon for sure, before that I don’t think so. I will now play every week, then Wimbledon and then the three clay tournaments in Europe – Umag, Gstaad and Kitzbühel.”

But first there is the home game in Mauthausen.
