Danube Upper Austria Open powered by SKE: Ujvary creates qualification – and demands Thiem – ÖTV

In his second qualifier at the ATP 100 Challenger in Mauthausen, Matthias Ujvary seamlessly continued his strong performance from the previous day. The 18-year-old (ATP 1439) mastered the last hurdle with flying colors and surprisingly made it into the main competition of the Danube Upper Austria Open powered by SKE with a clear 6: 4, 6: 2 against the Serb Branko Djuric (ATP 1131). David Pichler (ATP 488), on the other hand, had to admit defeat to Romanian Marius Copil (ATP 384) 5: 7, 1: 6 after a strong first set.

Ujvary is clearly happy at the Danubis tennis center. After a brilliant performance in the first qualifying round on Sunday, the Burgenlander was able to confirm his good form on the second day of the tournament and dispatched Djuric in just 80 minutes. “I knew I had to play really well to win today. But I didn’t expect to have the ball on my racket so well and to be able to hold my serves so solidly. I wanted to play an active part in the match, and I managed that very well. During the periods when Branko picked up the pace, I had good trajectory in my shots. That’s how it went,” Ujvary summed up. And added: “The qualification I passed is the greatest success of my career. It means a lot to me, but my journey in Mauthausen is not over yet – it can go further, a lot depends on the draw. I’ll prepare well mentally again and give it my all. A duel with Dominic (Thiem; note) would be a great experience for me, even if I would certainly have better chances with another draw.” And it was precisely this draw that should affect him when the qualifiers were allocated: Herbert Rosenkranz’s protégé met the top seeded Lower Austrian (ATP 96).

While Ujvary was happy about promotion, Pichler struggled a little after his defeat against Copil. After a solid and exciting first set, the momentum in the decisive game shifted to the experienced Romanian, who then played the game dry to the end. “The beginning was very good. In his second service game I dropped two break points and that’s how it went. I played really well until the end of the first set and also served really well. Then I didn’t hit the first serve anymore and after 0:30 you’re under a lot of pressure. The lost first set was mentally difficult for me. Marius is very experienced and then played it cleverly. I didn’t get along with that anymore. Still, I’m happy with my two performances. It’s always cool to play in a Challenger tournament. The win yesterday gives me a boost for the next games,” Pichler summed up after his defeat.
