Brazil to Host 2027 Women’s World Cup: European Bid Unsuccessful

As of: May 17, 2024 7:51 a.m

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will take place in Brazil. Germany’s joint application with Belgium and the Netherlands was unsuccessful.

The FIFA Congress in Bangkok voted 119:78 in favor of the application from Brazil on Friday (May 17, 2024).

207 of the 211 member associations were entitled to vote; neither Brazil nor the three associations from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands were allowed to vote on their own application. 197 valid votes were cast. The Women’s World Cup was awarded for the first time in Congress, and so far the FIFA Council has voted on it.

The European bid was already an outsider in advance

Both sides had previously presented their applications. The European application once again promoted its compactness with stadiums in North Rhine-Westphalia, Belgium and the Netherlands, and there was also the prospect of high revenues.

The efforts were in vain. The application from Brazil was already favored in advance. Reasons:

  • In FIFA’s test reports, the application from Brazil received an overall score of 4.0 (maximum score 5.0), while the European application only received a 3.7. The report assesses aspects such as infrastructure with stadiums and accommodation, marketing, sustainability, human rights and legal issues. But there was also state support; the report warned of “risks in the contractual framework” for FIFA.
  • Germany last hosted the World Cup in 2011, Europe and France only hosted it in 2019 – but South America never did.
  • The “One Love” farce at the 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar caused displeasure in many countries; all three European candidates wanted to wear the armband before they were pressured into giving up by FIFA. The relationship with the world association was at times very tense. Voting is often used in FIFA meetings to punish, settle scores or clarify political balances of power.
  • In contrast to three other South American countries, Brazil came away empty-handed in the deal for the practically fixed awarding of the men’s tournaments in 2030 and 2034; South America only received three games anyway. The awarding of the 2027 World Cup can serve as a balance in terms of sports policy.
