Cardiff City is demanding 100 million euros from FC Nantes in a lawsuit as compensation for the death of attacker Emiliano Sala in 2019 due to a plane crash. Nantes lawyers confirmed the charges to the news agency on Monday AFP.
Cardiff took over the Argentinian from the French club in January 2019. On January 21, two days after signing his contract, the 28-year-old striker died in a plane crash on his way to the Welsh club.
The clubs tried to find a solution about the financial settlement in consultation, but did not succeed. Nantes then went to FIFA at the end of February 2019. The world football association ordered Cardiff to pay the first 6 million euros of the initial transfer amount of 17 million euros and sports tribunal CAS confirmed that ruling.
“After being clearly rejected by FIFA, the CAS and also the Swiss Federal Court, Cardiff is opening a new absurd legal front,” said Nantes’ lawyers. “Cardiff first estimated the so-called damage at EUR 17 million and that claim was rejected. Now, before a civil court, Cardiff estimates the same damage at EUR 100 million.”
According to French media, Cardiff wants the transferred 6 million euros back including interest. The club would also demand compensation for “losses suffered” and reputational damage. In addition, Cardiff would argue that with Sala, the club would not have been relegated from the Premier League that season. The club is now active in the Championship.
The case is scheduled for June 22.
