A league seems drunk

The 2nd league is entering the decisive phase: Six former first division clubs will be fighting to return to the Bundesliga (BBL) from Friday – provided their licensing committee is willing. They are joined by surprise climbers Dresden Titans and the recently almost unbeatable PS Karlsruhe Lions. There were plenty of surprising results during the season. When asked about this in a recent interview with TAGBLATT, former player Roland Nyama from Tübingen and now from Giessen said: “Pro A is a bit drunk. I have never experienced such a sports league. I’m counting the days until Schwenninger, who are so depleted in terms of personnel, win another game.” So it can definitely be fun in the final spurt of the season. The most important things from Tübingen’s point of view at a glance.

The mode: After the main round, the eight best teams determine the Bundesliga promoted and the Pro A champions over three playoff rounds. In the quarterfinals, the first (Vechta) and eighth (Hagen), second (Tübingen) and seventh (Bremerhaven) meet. , the third (Karlsruhe) and the sixth (Artland) as well as the fourth (Gießen) and the fifth (Dresden) on top of each other. Whoever wins three games first in best-of-five mode is in the semi-finals. The best-of-five mode also applies here. The better-placed team has home advantage first, then play continues in rotation. It’s different in the Bundesliga, where the better-ranked team plays twice and then the worse-ranked team twice. The two Pro A finalists receive the sporting promotion right to the Bundesliga. However, whether they are actually allowed to go up also depends on whether they receive the Bundesliga license. The final then decides – not typical for basketball – in the first and second leg. The points are added up, whoever scored more is the champion.

The Tigers Terms: The start of the playoff quarter-finals is on Friday at 7.30 p.m. in the Paul-Horn-Arena in Tübingen against the Eisbären Bremerhaven. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday, May 7th at 4 p.m. in the Stadthalle Bremerhaven. Game 3 takes place again in Tübingen on Wednesday, May 10th at 7:30 p.m. If there is no decision by then, the game will continue on Friday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Bremerhaven and possibly on Sunday, May 14, at 6 p.m. in Tübingen. It is still unclear what would happen in a possible semi-final for the Tigers between Ascension Day, May 18, and Whit Sunday, May 28, because the dates will be drawn. The two finals would be on Friday 2nd and Sunday 4th June.

The audience: Since December 2018, when it was still in the Bundesliga in the derby against Ludwigsburg, the Paul Horn Arena in Tübingen, with a capacity of a good 3100 people, has not been sold out. The Tübingen second division record is 3000 people in February 2019 against Chemnitz (80:98). In the playoffs last year, the corona capacity restrictions were lifted, but the masses were still holding back. That could change this year. In the main round, the Tigers had an official home average of 1974 people, which means 8th place in the league comparison. The hall was 63 percent occupied. A total of 33,566 people attended Tigers home games. Tickets are also available from the TAGBLATT offices.

The promotion prospects: “It’s not at all unrealistic from a sporting point of view,” Tübingen’s assistant coach Tom Walther was recently quoted in the hall magazine regarding the chances of returning to the Bundesliga after four years in the second division, “but only if everything really fits as a team.” He continued: ” We want that too, because otherwise there could be a change in the team.” If things don’t work out this year, it would probably be difficult to keep Mateo Šeric or Zac Seljaas.

After the Corona discounts, the minimum budget for the Bundesliga is again 3 million euros for the 2022/23 season. With the exception of the Dresden Titans, who were only promoted to Pro A last year, all playoff teams have applied for a license for the 1st division. “The evidence […] must by the key date 15.4. be provided to the extent that it can be assumed with certainty that the minimum budget will be reached.” This is what the BBL license statute says. Tigers manager Jascha Maus is optimistic that the numbers will fit.

The league wants to announce tomorrow, Thursday, who would receive a license. According to the license statute, at least 80 percent of the planned sponsorship income must be submitted to the league in the form of signed contracts by July 15. A maximum of 300,000 euros may be so-called bartering transactions, i.e. barter transactions without cash flow, such as gang advertising for consulting services.
