After holding a soccer World Cup at the end of 2022, Qatar has now obtained the organization of the 2027 men’s basketball World Cup, the International Federation (FIBA) announced on Friday.
“All the matches of the prestigious tournament will be played in the city of Doha,” indicates the FIBA statement, which ensures that “all the sites used for this FIBA event are already built.”
Organized every four years, the next Basketball World Cup must be held in the Philippines from August 25 to September 10, except for a part of the group stage hosted in Japan and Indonesia.
Women’s World Cup, to Germany
In parallel, the 2026 Women’s World Cup was awarded to Germany, in which two rooms in Berlin will host all the matches.
For the emirate, it is a new step in the sports world after the 2022 Soccer World Cup but also after the Athletics World Cups in 2019 or the Handball World Cup in 2015.
Its neighbors on the Arabian peninsula, where Formula 1 Grand Prix have multiplied (Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Qatar itself), have not been left behind. The Saudi kingdom, host of the Dakar rally since 2020, is preparing a bid for the organization of the 2030 soccer World Cup, perhaps jointly with Greece and Egypt.
In the world of basketball, the EuroLeague must rule on the inclusion of a team from the United Arab Emirates in June.
