Spanish professional soccer will exceed pre-pandemic income

He Spanish professional football will reach 3,900 million euros at the end of the 2022-2023 season, which represents a growth of 7% compared to the previous year, and it will exceed the figures of the last pre-pandemic campaign, according to the forecasts of the DBK Sectoral Observatory of Informa published this week.

In this sense, the greatest dynamism will correspond to the area of ​​marketing and advertising, in which a turnover growth of more than 20% is expected, which will be supported by the positive results expected in this line of business due to the Real Madrid CF and the FC Barcelona.

‘Match Day’ boosted growth

The return of the public to the stadiums without restrictions It was the engine of growth in the 2021-2022 season, in which the ‘Match day’ experienced an increase of 126.9%, driven by the recovery of box office income and the return to the collection of season tickets to members. Revenues from members and subscribers increased by 551% and those from competitions by 73%.

Likewise, the first and second division clubs generated a global turnover of 3,910 million eurosincluding player transfers, with a growth of 6% compared to the previous season.

However, the figures for last season, excluding player transfers, which decreased by 29%, were 3,655 million euros, 3.1% lower than the figures for the 2018-2019 season.

Real Madrid leads the income ranking

He 37,2% of the aggregate figure of operating income from professional football in the 2021-2022 season was generated between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Specifically, Real Madrid was, once again, the club that obtained the most operating income with a figure close to 722 million euros and a share of 19.7%, followed by FC Barcelona, ​​with 639 million and 17 ,5% fee.

Third in the Spanish league was occupied by Atletico Madridwith 11.7% of the overall figure, followed by Sevilla FC y Villarreal CFwhose percentages drop to 5.2% and 5%, respectively.

In the European classification, Real Madrid was the second in income level, only surpassed by Manchester City.

Profitability remains negative

The aggregate profit and loss account for the sector, considering 31 clubs, reflected some operating losses of about 16 million euros in the year ended June 2022, which represented 0.5% of revenue. Considering the same clubs, the previous year had resulted in losses of 799 million euros.

In particular, the figure for financial expenses is high, accounting for a negative financial result of close to 100 million euros in the year ended June 2022. For its part, around 72% of the income was used to cover personnel costs, with the average labor cost per employee standing at 272,400 euros.
