Judo fighter Fabian Kansy (21) from Neufahrn wants to take the next steps in the European Cup and at the European Championships at home. His big goal is the 2028 Olympics.

new vehicle – After his outstanding placement at the U23 European Championships and second place at the German men’s judo championships in the weight class up to 90 kilos, Fabian Kansy, who is new to driving, is now focusing on the European Cup. There he would like to recommend himself for further tournaments – and fulfill his dream of the Olympics in the long term.

Fabian Kansy had “everything geared towards the U23 European Championships” in 2022. With a fifth and a seventh place in the European Cup, the 21-year-old judoka fought his way to the nomination for the European Championships in Sarajevo last October – and showed a strong performance there Achievement: “In the men’s individual competition, I was the second best German,” said Kansy, who would have liked to have had a medal. Nevertheless, he could be satisfied with fifth place. And at least he didn’t come back empty-handed: in the mixed team competition he won the silver medal with the German team. “I still have one more year in the U23s this year. That’s why the individual medal at the European Championships is the big goal,” says the judo ace, who is already looking forward to the European Championships at home in Potsdam at the end of November.

The squad athlete also demonstrated his enormous potential at the German championships: he surprised the national competition with his second place in the class up to 90 kilograms. The start of 2023 was more than successful for him. In the semifinals he eliminated, among others, Martin Matijass, who already had a fifth place in a Grand Slam tournament.

Off to the competition in Dubrovnik

After all these successes, the Neufahrner allowed himself a break from fighting, but meanwhile trained intensively for the upcoming season. A three-week stay in Japan and a training camp in Austria with the best judoka in the world served as preparation for the upcoming European Cups. The first international competition is scheduled for next weekend in Croatia. “I’m going to compete in a European Cup in Dubrovnik and I’m hoping for a good result,” said Kansy. Because with a strong placement, he could not only secure the nomination for the home European Championship at an early stage, but also offer himself for use in Grands Prix and Grand Slams. “The other tournaments all depend on the first results.”

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

The Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China, are a major interim goal this year. Although Kansy hopes for a nomination, “but I have strong competition within Germany, because only one per weight class is allowed to drive”. After this event had to be postponed several times due to the pandemic, students from previous years are also eligible, which makes qualification even more difficult. Participation in the European Games in Poland at the end of June and beginning of July is also a goal for the season.

Change to KSV Esslingen

To do this, the 21-year-old mechanical engineering student trains eight to eleven times a week at the Olympic base in Großhadern. The athlete is supported by his family. “When the European Cups started, my parents traveled all over Europe and saw it there. I could always rely on them,” says the top athlete, who trained in Großhadern at the age of nine before moving to the Olympic base there when he was twelve.

The parents organized the many training trips themselves – and these efforts paid off: last season he became champion in the Judo Bundesliga with TSV Abensberg. And after moving to KSV Esslingen, last year’s German runners-up, he wants to be at the top again this year: “We have a strong team.” In Esslingen, Kansy is fighting alongside several former colleagues from the junior national team, which is why he assumes that the KSV can achieve great success over the years. During the change, he also had the feeling “that many things are going more the way I would like them to be there”.

Kansy wants to play off his standing and inside skills in particular and also relies on his good stamina. “But my greatest strength is the 100 percent determination to want to achieve something,” says the 21-year-old, who still has a lot planned in his career. It is true that the dream of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is difficult to achieve given the strong national competition – “but the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles is the big goal”.
