Damián van der Vaart has signed a new contract with Ajax, the only seventeen-year-old midfielder announced on Wednesday via his Instagram page. The Amsterdam club still has to officially confirm the contract extension of Rafael van der Vaart’s son.

“I am happy that my club has extended my contract, so that I can continue working on my dream,” Van der Vaart junior writes with a photo of him admiring the Johan Cruijff ArenA wearing an Ajax shirt. Mother Sylvie Meis is ‘incredibly proud’, she writes in a response to her son’s message.

The contract extension comes eight months after Damián van der Vaart signed a one-year deal with Ajax. Apparently the technical management sees sufficient grounds to offer the midfielder a new deal, although nothing is yet known about the exact contract duration.

The young midfielder came over from Danish Esbjerg fB last year and joined Ajax’s Under 18 team. He has so far scored one goal and two assists in the youth team of the Amsterdam team. Van der Vaart played 624 minutes this season.

Like his father, Damián is a midfielder, who prefers to play in the number ten position. A big difference is that Rafael was left-footed, while Damián has a better right leg.

The Zaanstad-born youngster, who will celebrate his eighteenth birthday at the end of May, was called up for the first time for the Dutch Under 16s in March 2022. Damian previously also played in the youth of SC Victoria Hamburg.
